It's amazing what can happen, when you start with a labor of love.
GRC started in January of 1989 when Shirley Berens's grand-children
were placed in foster care and she was denied visitation rights. At
that time, there were few or no resources available in the community
to help grandparents. Shirley's initial raw anger was replaced with
prayer, coupled with a profound determination to serve the best interests
of her grandchildren. Ultimately, that determination broadened to encompass
all similarly situated grandparents.
For seven years, Shirley struggled with the court system;
but,
during the interim period, her efforts, through GRC, gave a voice to
grandparents, in the form of the 1991 passage of the Grandparents
Visitation Rights Colorado bill (H.B. 91-1255, S.B. 97-152).
Since its founding, the GRC has served more than 25,000
grand-parents in Colorado and nationwide. Today, the GRC is nationally
recognized as the most comprehensive grassroots nonprofit resource
organization for grandparenting issues a recognition validated
by the AARP.
